Retrospective Case Control Studies

IAA is affiliated with multiple research and development programs, allowing team members to work on cutting edge anesthesia research.

Opportunity Overview

In our observational /retrospective case-control studies, we formulate a novel anesthetic protocol.

After clearance from our institutional review board, we use chart review methods to investigate the efficacy of our protocol.


A great example of this is our recent retrospective case-control study of split-dose erector spinae for robotic thoracotomy [ASRA 2021, R. Suriani et. al].


Research trainees interested in authoring retrospective case-control studies should have a strong foundation in basic statistics and study design.


After developing a hypothesis, collaborating with our surgical colleagues, and acquiring clearance from our institutional review board, research trainees will work closely with senior anesthesia faculty in the process of reviewing electronic medical records and writing a publication-quality manuscript with accompanying statistical analysis and graphs.

  • Adobe Illustrator and
  • BioDraw
  • Study design
  • Power analysis and advanced statistical analysis with SAS, STATA and PRISM
  • Basic statistical analysis
  • Implementing propensity score matching using ‘psmatch2’ algorithms in STATA
  • Basic regression analysis
  • Box-plot / violin plot creation
