This year’s HHC Research Symposium was held on Tuesday, October 26th. Presenting to a packed room of interested anesthesiologists, residents, fellows, and colleagues were Trevor Sutton, MD, MBA, CPE, and team, and Kevin Finkel, MD, FASA, and his team.
IAA’s Trevor Sutton, MD, MBA, CPE
Funded by an HHC Health Equity Research Grant, Dr. Sutton highlighted IAA’s presence in health equity research as well as our engagement in medical student mentoring at both the Frank H Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University and the Anesthesia Program at UConn.

Ervin is currently completing a Capstone thesis with a concentration in Global, Community, and Population Health. He is also Dr. Sutton’s mentee for the ASA Professional Diversity Grant.

The first poster presented data on the IAA-HCD research team’s LIBERATE trial, comparing blocks with liposomal bupivacaine to block with bupivacaine + additives in total shoulder replacement surgeries. It showed that patients who received interscalene blocks with liposomal bupivacaine had significantly lower pain scores but similar opioid consumption to those patients who received the blocks with bupivacaine + additives.
The second poster presented data on preop erector spinae plane blocks in patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery, showing significantly lower pain scores and opioid consumption in patients receiving these blocks compared to those who did not.
