IAA just recently completed the 2nd year of the IAA Youth Scholars Program. This is a weeklong program that allows high school students from the local communities we serve including Hartford, Bridgeport, and New Britain that have an interest in the medical field to participate in a unique experience which provides a window into the world of a potential career in healthcare.
The program is designed around a daily opportunity to scrub in and shadow in the OR and observe a variety of surgical cases followed by a daily lunch and learn session, which is conducted by local medical students from UCONN and Quinnipiac University. The idea around this program came from IAA’s Dr. David Maduram, who participated in a similar program while he was a Junior in high school, and this led to him pursuing his career choice as an anesthesiologist. Dr. Maduram’s earlier experience was enthusiastically embraced by IAA’s Dr. Trevor Sutton, who had a vision to have this program reach students in communities across the state, to engage local medical students for didactic learning sessions, and to provide the high school students with not only a unique experience but to conclude the week with the students receiving a life-saving CPR Certification course conducted by Kelly Gorski, and hands on simulation training at Hartford Healthcare’s Center for Education, Simulation, and Innovation.
This year 12 students participated from 6 different high schools including Hartford Public High School, Fairchild Wheeler in Bridgeport, to name a few. Special thanks to all those that were involved to help make this program a success! We are already looking forward to next year!
