The power of film, particularly when it’s a poignant documentary, cannot be denied. It has the incredible potential to bring people together for meaningful discussion, foster grassroots advocacy, raise awareness, and create important personal and professional connections. That’s exactly what happened on February 6th, 2024, at the Wadsworth Athenaeum during the viewing of the documentary “Black Men in White Coats” with follow-up participation in the panel discussion and question and answer session.
IAA’s Dr. Trevor Sutton joined Dr. Dale Okorodudu, the creator of the documentary, “Black Men in White Coats” and additional representatives from Hartford Healthcare’s black provider community to reflect upon their roles in healthcare and acknowledge their obligation to further diversify the system’s provider workforce for each other and our patients.
During this event, panel participants and attendees learned more about the perspective of underrepresented minorities joining our profession and engaged in a conversation about how we can join with our communities to create a healthcare workforce that reflects the diversity of patients we serve.
As we celebrate Black History Month, this successful event was well received, and co-sponsored by the following departments: Academic Affairs, Center for Human Experience, Hartford Hospital Department of Medicine, The HHC Center for Health Equity, and the Wadsworth Athenaeum.
The Moderator for the evening was Dr. Javeed Sukhera, Department of Psychiatry.
Panelists included:
- Dr. Dale Okorodudu, Department of Pulmonary Critical Care at UT-SouthWestern
