FAQs & Facts About Treatment with Ketamine

Getting Started

It has been recognized by physicians and patients alike that traditional antidepressant medications take up to several months before effectiveness can be determined.

In addition, most medications used for the treatment of depression have undesirable side effects such as weight gain, and sexual dysfunction.

Ketamine is different and fast-acting.

In fact, ketamine treatment effects are generally seen immediately. And importantly, there are no lingering effects on appetite or sexual function once your treatment is complete.

Although ketamine has a long record of safety in anesthesia practice, not everyone is a good candidate for ketamine treatment.

Preexisting conditions that are contraindicated include, but are not limited to Chronic Heart Failure (CHF), and Dialysis.

We encourage you to speak with our team to discuss your health and medication history if you have questions or concerns.

Ketamine is an anesthetic medication developed over 50 years ago. It has been used extensively in trauma and emergency situations. Unlike other anesthetic agents, Ketamine does not cause respiratory depression.

Dosages used in the treatment of chronic psychiatric disorders or pain syndromes are typically one half to one third of a typical dose used for anesthesia and surgery. In addition, because our treatments are given as a slow drip (intravenous infusion), dangerous side effects are rarely seen.

Chronic disorders such as depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and some chronic pain disorders share a common feature of failed communication or nerve tissues within the central nervous system. Contacts between neurons is lost over time due to the chronic nature of these conditions. Ketamine promotes regrowth of axons, and the reformation of these neuronal connections.

Clinical and experimental evidence is accumulating on the precise mechanism of action of ketamine. It is currently the subject of intense research specifically because the initial results observed over the past decade have been extremely promising.

Chemically, Ketamine causes inhibition of the NMDA receptor leading to a glutamate “burst”. These actions occur at the frontal, and hippocampus regions of the brain, areas which are associated with mood, emotion, and cognitive abilities, as well as motivation.

Depression is characterized by a decrease in these areas.

Consequently, Ketamine improves function in these areas as neurons regenerate through a process referred to as “plasticity.” Although some of these effects are transient, it is thought that giving repeated ketamine maintenance doses allows functional adaptation to become more permanent over time.

Ketamine infusion treatment is generally successful in 70-75% of patients. Symptomatic improvement is often present within hours of treatment, and last for up to 7 days after initial infusion. This rapid onset is a revolutionary for “Treatment Resistant Depression” (TRD), and the prevention of suicide risk.

For long term success, an initial course of 6- 8 treatments is recommended over a 3 week period. Individual responses vary, but many patients achieve long term improvement when maintenance therapy is continued at regular intervals.
